Winnable Solitaire: What It Means and How Verified Deals Work

Understand verified Winnable deals, separate Draw 1 and Draw 3 checks, and what a proven solution guarantees.

Play Klondike Solitaire

A winnable Solitaire game is a deal for which at least one legal sequence of moves leads to a win. That sounds simple, but it makes an important difference: not every randomly shuffled Klondike deal is guaranteed to be solvable, and a deal that starts winnable can still be lost after the wrong moves.

In Uletime's Klondike Solitaire, you can choose between Random and Winnable deals in either Draw 1 or Draw 3 mode. Our winnable deals have been checked by a solver and then independently replayed under the game's own rules.

What does “winnable” mean in Klondike Solitaire?

In Klondike, the goal is to move all 52 cards to the four foundation piles, building each suit from Ace to King. Cards begin in seven tableau columns and a stock pile, with most tableau cards face down.

A deal is winnable if there is at least one valid path from that exact starting arrangement to all four completed foundations. A verified deal is not merely one that looks promising or contains lots of easy early moves: an actual winning sequence has been found and checked.

A winnable label does not mean:

  • Every move you make is safe.
  • The Hint button knows the complete winning sequence.
  • The game will automatically prevent you from making an irreversible mistake.
  • You will necessarily win without planning, Undo, or a restart.

It is better to think of Winnable mode as a fair starting challenge with a proven solution, not as an automatic win.

Random vs. Winnable Solitaire

Deal typeHow the game startsWhat is guaranteed?
RandomA fresh 52-card shuffleA valid Klondike layout, but no promise of a solution
WinnableA deal selected from a preverified libraryAt least one legal winning path from the initial position

Neither mode changes the underlying card-moving rules. You still build descending, alternating-color runs in the tableau, move Aces through Kings to foundations, and manage the stock and waste carefully.

Choose Random if you enjoy the uncertainty of a freshly shuffled deal. Choose Winnable if you prefer knowing a complete solution exists before making your first move.

Why Draw 1 and Draw 3 need separate verification

The same shuffled cards can play very differently depending on the stock rules.

In Draw 1, one card moves from the stock to the waste at a time. In Draw 3, up to three cards are drawn together, and only the top waste card is immediately playable. Removing a waste card can reveal another one, and cycling through the stock can change which cards become accessible next.

That is why a deal proven winnable in Draw 1 must not automatically be described as winnable in Draw 3—or vice versa. Each mode needs its own solution check.

Uletime's Klondike allows repeated stock passes, with the waste returned to the stock in a defined order. Verification has to follow those exact rules, along with legal tableau moves, foundation moves, and the automatic reveal of face-down tableau cards.

How Uletime verifies winnable deals

Instead of claiming that a randomly generated deal is probably solvable, Uletime uses an offline verification process:

  1. Generate a complete deck order. Start with a shuffled arrangement of all 52 distinct cards.
  2. Build the exact opening layout. Deal the cards into Klondike's seven tableau columns and the stock according to Uletime's rules.
  3. Search for a winning route. An offline Solitaire solver explores legal moves for a specific draw mode.
  4. Replay every move independently. The proposed solution is checked again using Uletime's own game-rule engine, including stock draws, waste recycling, tableau sequences, foundation moves, and card reveals.
  5. Save only verified deals. A deal enters the Winnable library for that draw mode only after the full replay reaches a legitimate win.

If a solver runs out of time or cannot find a solution within its search budget, that does not prove the deal is impossible. We simply do not add that attempt to the verified library.

How many deals are verified?

Uletime's initial Winnable library contains 1,000 verified Draw 1 deals and 1,000 verified Draw 3 deals. These are 2,000 independently verified deal-and-mode combinations, not necessarily 2,000 different deck arrangements: a deck may be verified for both modes.

The winning move sequences are used during offline verification. They are not downloaded as part of normal gameplay, and choosing Winnable does not run an expensive solver in your browser.

Can you lose a winnable Solitaire game?

Yes. Winnable describes the starting position, not every possible position you can create afterward.

For example, moving a card to a foundation too early may block a tableau move you later need. Moving a useful sequence onto the wrong column can also restrict access to hidden cards. A different legal choice might have preserved the winning path.

If you get stuck, you can try Undo to reconsider recent decisions or Restart to play the same opening deal again. The ordinary Hint feature suggests legal moves, but it is not a guarantee that following every hint will lead to victory.

How to play a verified Winnable game on Uletime

  1. Open Klondike Solitaire.
  2. Choose Draw 1 or Draw 3 in the new-game settings.
  3. Set the deal type to Winnable instead of Random.
  4. Start the game and play using the normal Klondike rules.
  5. Use Restart if you want another attempt at the same verified opening arrangement.

For an easier-to-follow experience, consider starting with Draw 1. Draw 3 introduces additional stock-order decisions, even when the deal has a verified solution.

Tips for making the most of a winnable deal

  • Prioritize uncovering face-down tableau cards. More visible cards mean more options.
  • Think before moving a card to a foundation. Some cards may still be useful in building tableau sequences.
  • Pay attention to the waste pile. This is especially important in Draw 3, where access depends on the draw order.
  • Avoid filling an empty tableau column without a purpose. A King or King-led sequence should help reveal cards or create useful moves.
  • Use Restart to learn. Because the starting deal stays the same, you can test a different approach instead of relying on luck alone.

Frequently asked questions

Are all Klondike Solitaire games winnable?

No. A random Klondike deal is not guaranteed to have a legal solution. A verified Winnable deal, by contrast, has passed a complete solution replay for its specific draw mode.

Does Winnable mode make Solitaire easier?

It removes uncertainty about whether a solution exists at the start, but it does not necessarily make the required decisions easy. Some verified deals can still be challenging.

Does a winnable Draw 1 game also work in Draw 3?

Not necessarily. Stock access differs between the two modes, so Uletime verifies each mode separately.

Will Uletime show me the winning solution?

Not in the current Winnable mode. A complete winning path is used to verify the deal offline, but the game is still intended for you to solve. The normal Hint and Undo controls remain available.

What happens if I make a mistake?

The deal remains verified as winnable from its original starting position, but your current position may no longer be solvable. Try Undo or Restart and explore a different sequence of moves.
