How to Play Water Sort Puzzle: Rules, Moves & Beginner Tips

Water Sort Puzzle is a color-sorting game where you move layers of colored liquid between tubes until every non-empty tube contains only one color.

The rules are simple, but later levels require planning. A move that looks useful now can block an important color several steps later.

What Is the Goal of Water Sort?

The goal is to sort all mixed colors so that each completed tube contains four layers of the same color.

Empty tubes may remain when the puzzle is complete.

A level is solved when every non-empty tube is full and contains only one color.

How to Move Water

To make a move:

  1. Select a tube that contains liquid.
  2. Select another tube as the destination.
  3. The game pours as much of the top color as possible.

If several matching layers are connected at the top, they move together when the destination has enough room.

When Can You Pour Into Another Tube?

A move is legal only when the destination tube:

  • is empty, or
  • has the same color on top as the liquid you are moving.

The destination also needs at least one free space.

You cannot pour:

  • into a full tube,
  • onto a different color,
  • from an empty tube,
  • or back into the same tube.

What Happens If There Is Not Enough Space?

The game pours only as much liquid as the destination tube can hold.

If the top three layers in your source tube are purple but the destination has room for only two layers, only two purple layers move. The remaining purple layer stays in the source tube.

Why Empty Tubes Matter

Empty tubes are the most flexible spaces on the board.

They let you temporarily move blocking colors out of the way so you can reach useful layers underneath.

Beginners often fill every empty tube too quickly. That reduces the number of possible moves and can make a solvable level feel stuck.

A good rule is:

Try to keep at least one empty tube, or one tube with plenty of free space, available whenever possible.

Common Beginner Mistakes

Filling every empty tube immediately

Empty space is a resource. If both spare tubes become filled with unrelated colors, you may lose the flexibility needed to reorganize the board.

Combining matching colors too early

Matching colors are usually good to merge, but not always immediately. A merge can bury another useful color or consume your only flexible tube.

Completing the easiest color without looking ahead

Finishing a color simplifies the board, but forcing it too early can use space needed elsewhere.

Moving water without exposing anything useful

A useful move usually joins matching colors, exposes a buried color, creates free space, or prepares another good move.

If a move does none of those things, it may simply rearrange the problem.

Ignoring the layers underneath

The top layer is only part of the puzzle. Try to remember what colors are buried below it so you can decide which tubes should be opened first.

Beginner Tips That Work on Most Levels

Keep flexible space available

One empty tube can completely change what moves are possible.

Expose useful colors

Try to move blockers in a way that reveals a color you can immediately use.

Build clean stacks

Two or three matching layers together are easier to manage than the same color spread across several tubes.

Finish colors when it is safe

A completed tube removes one active color from the puzzle, but do not sacrifice all your working space just to finish one.

Use Undo when a move closes too many options

If a move leaves you with fewer useful destinations and no clear next step, Undo can be better than continuing deeper into a bad sequence.

How Do You Know When a Level Is Solved?

A level is complete when every non-empty tube contains four layers of one identical color.

Empty tubes can remain.

Is Every Water Sort Level Solvable?

In our Water Sort game, the included levels are designed to have a valid solution.

That does not mean every sequence of moves will work. If you create a bad position, use Undo or Restart and try another route.

Can You Play Water Sort on Mobile?

Yes. Water Sort works especially well on mobile because the controls are simple: tap a source tube, then tap the destination tube.

There is no need for precise dragging or fast reactions.

What Should You Do When You Get Stuck?

Check these questions:

  1. Do you still have an empty tube?
  2. Is there a color group you can safely combine?
  3. Which tube is hiding the most useful color?
  4. Did your last move reduce your available space?
  5. Can Undo restore a more flexible position?
