How to Make Your Own 2048 Game with Photos

Learn how to create your own 2048 game with photos, use Smart Fill with 1–11 images, customize the game name, and start playing in minutes.

Play 2048 Custom

A custom 2048 game is an easy way to turn your own photos into something playable. Instead of using only numbered tiles, you can make the board feel personal with pictures of pets, family, travel memories, characters, food, memes, or almost any image set you like.

With 2048 Custom, you do not need to prepare eleven different pictures before you can start. You can create a complete photo-based game with just one image, or upload several photos and let Smart Fill distribute them across the tile levels automatically.

If you want to try it immediately, open 2048 Custom and choose Customize with Your Photos.

What is a custom 2048 game?

Classic 2048 uses numbered tiles such as 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, and so on. You swipe the board to combine matching tiles until you reach 2048 or continue beyond it.

A photo 2048 game keeps the same core rules but changes how the tiles look. Each value can display an image while still showing a small number badge so the board remains easy to understand.

That means you can keep the familiar 2048 gameplay while giving the game a completely different theme.

For example, you could create:

  • a pet 2048 using photos of your cat or dog;
  • a family 2048 with different family members;
  • a travel 2048 made from vacation photos;
  • a baby-growth 2048 using pictures from different ages;
  • a meme 2048 with funny images;
  • a character-themed 2048 using your favorite artwork.

Step 1: Open 2048 Custom

Go to 2048 Custom.

You can play the default version immediately, but if you want to make your own game, choose Customize with Your Photos.

The customization flow is intentionally simple. The main task is choosing your photos. You do not need to configure complicated spawn probabilities, tile colors, fonts, or game rules.

Step 2: Choose 1–11 photos

Tap Choose Photos and select images from your phone, tablet, or computer.

You can use anywhere from 1 to 11 photos.

This matters because a custom game should not require a long setup process. If you only have one good picture ready, that is enough to start.

Before upload, the game processes images in the browser. Photos are resized and compressed so the game does not need to upload the original full-resolution file.

If you upload one photo

The same photo is used across all tile levels.

The number badges still show the difference between 2, 4, 8, 16, and higher values, so the game remains playable even when every tile uses the same image.

If you upload several photos

Smart Fill automatically spreads them across the eleven tile levels.

For example, if you upload three photos, the game can use photo 1 for early values, photo 2 for the middle values, and photo 3 for the highest values.

This creates a sense of progression without forcing you to manually assign every image.

If you upload eleven photos

Each photo can represent one tile level from 2 through 2048.

This gives you the most complete version of a photo 2048 game and works especially well for image sets that already have a natural order.

Step 3: Let Smart Fill build the tile set

2048 uses eleven main tile levels:

2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, and 2048.

Smart Fill maps your uploaded images onto those levels automatically.

The goal is to remove unnecessary setup. You should be able to choose a few pictures, see the result, and start playing quickly.

The number badge remains visible on every photo tile. This matters because two tiles can use the same image while still representing different values.

Step 4: Name your game

You can optionally give your game a name.

Examples include:

  • Milo's Cat 2048
  • Our Family 2048
  • Japan Trip 2048
  • Birthday Photo 2048
  • Football Legends 2048

A name is especially useful if you plan to share the game with someone else.

Step 5: Apply the photos and play

Choose Apply & Play.

Your custom tile set is added to the 2048 board and you can start playing immediately.

The controls are the same as normal 2048:

  • swipe on mobile;
  • use the arrow keys on desktop;
  • combine matching tiles;
  • keep building larger values;
  • try to reach 2048.

Because the game keeps the original 2048 rules, there is almost no learning curve if you have played 2048 before.

What kinds of photos work best?

Square or nearly square photos usually work best because each 2048 tile is square.

You do not need to crop everything manually before selecting it. The game prepares the image for the tile, but a clear subject usually gives the best result.

Good choices include:

  • faces that are easy to recognize;
  • pets centered in the frame;
  • objects with simple backgrounds;
  • bright, high-contrast images;
  • photos that remain recognizable at a small size.

Images with lots of tiny details may look less clear once they are displayed inside a tile.

Do I really need eleven different photos?

No.

For most people, one to three photos are enough to create something fun.

Eleven photos are useful when you want every level to reveal something new, but they should be treated as an optional advanced version rather than a requirement.

If you want ideas for arranging a smaller photo set, see How to Make a Custom 2048 with Your Own Pictures.

Can I share the game?

Yes. After creating your custom version, you can generate a share link.

The person opening the link can play the game with the same custom photo tile set.

If they choose to customize it, they work from their own copy rather than editing your original shared game.
