What Is a Mahjong Solitaire Layout?
A layout is the complete map of tile positions before faces are assigned. It defines every horizontal and vertical coordinate, each layer, and every overlap. The same set of tile faces can play very differently when moved from a broad, shallow arrangement to a compact board with several raised stacks.
The rules for matching remain the same across layouts. A tile must be uncovered and have an open horizontal side before it can be removed. How Layers and Blocking Create Difficulty
Higher layers reduce the amount of information available at the start. One upper tile can overlap two or four positions below, while a small raised cluster can hold an entire central region closed. Removing its top pair may therefore reveal several tiles at once—or progress may stop if the necessary partner remains buried elsewhere.
Long same-layer rows create horizontal blocking. Interior tiles need access from the left or right, so progress advances from the ends. Separate wings or islands add another kind of pressure: each region may look open, but matching partners can be divided between areas that unlock at different speeds.
More layers do not automatically mean greater difficulty. A tall board with several open edges and useful opening pairs may be more forgiving than a shallow compact board with a tight center. Tile distribution, available matches, and the order of concealed faces matter alongside geometry.
The Classic Turtle Layout
Turtle is one of the most recognizable Mahjong Solitaire layout families. It commonly uses a broad base, a raised central body, and smaller extensions that suggest a head, tail, or legs. The wide footprint provides exposed outer tiles, while the center concentrates much of the vertical blocking.
Its main challenge is the relationship between easy-looking edge pairs and the stacked body. Removing exposed extensions can create room, but those tiles may also be useful partners for faces later uncovered in the center. Players should keep an eye on the highest tiles and the ends of long rows rather than automatically clearing the outline first.
Not every Turtle board is identical. Some versions are wider, some use different offsets, and some emphasize a taller center or longer side extensions. Bridge and arch layouts
Bridge-style boards divide the tiles into two larger areas connected by a narrower raised section. The connection may block access on both sides, so clearing the bridge can be more important than working through either outer group. These layouts suit players who want obvious regional choices and a meaningful central bottleneck.
Tower and pagoda layouts
Tower-like layouts emphasize vertical stacks or several raised peaks. A small number of top tiles can hide a large part of the board, making early access dependent on specific pairs. The names and exact forms vary between games, but this family generally rewards players who are comfortable planning around height and limited opening information.
Cross and fan layouts
Crosses extend from a central area in several directions, while fan-like boards spread outward in widening branches. Both can offer many exposed outer edges but funnel progress through a central core. They can feel open at first and then become constrained if one arm or branch is cleared without preserving partners for the center.
Fortress and compact layouts
Fortress-style boards often suggest walls, towers, courtyards, or a dense protected center. Compact layouts place many blocking relationships into a small footprint. They are useful for players who enjoy comparing several local regions, but they may offer fewer harmless reserve pairs than a wide, open board.
What Makes a Layout Easy or Difficult?
Difficulty comes from the interaction of geometry and the dealt faces. A layout tends to feel more forgiving when many tiles have open sides, upper layers reveal information steadily, and several regions can be worked independently. It becomes more demanding when a few key tiles control large stacks, long rows have limited entry points, or separated areas depend on partners buried in one another.
The number and quality of opening matches also matter. A board may look complex but provide several pairs that immediately release important positions. Best Layouts for Beginners
Beginners should choose by visible structure rather than name alone. Look for a board with fewer vertical layers, several open left and right edges, and a shape whose main rows and stacks are easy to distinguish. Symmetry can make the board easier to scan, although the tile faces themselves should not be expected to mirror each other.

Work from controlling positions rather than following the outline mechanically. Lower a tall stack when it hides several tiles; open both ends of a long row when possible; and avoid exhausting one region if its remaining tiles may need partners from another. After each match, reassess the shape because a single removal can turn a blocked interior tile into a new edge.
